FAQ

What You Need to Know

DO YOU ONLY MASSAGE PREGNANT WOMEN?

No! I enjoy working with all populations, although my expertise applies to women in their childbearing years and infants.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR MASSAGE SESSIONS?

All massage sessions with me include time for an intake conversation and debriefing after your session.  Massages may include aromatherapy, breath work, hot or cold stones, warm towels, cupping, or special oils, salves, or creams; these are all included in the price of your session.  The only additonal fee is for kinesiotape application, which will always be discussed prior to application.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO RECEIVE A FERTILITY MASSAGE?

Although you may receive benefits from fertility massage at any point in your cycle, the most ideal time to receive these sessions is between menstruation and ovulation.

IS IT SAFE TO RECEIVE PREGNANCY MASSAGE DURING THE FIRST TRIMESTER?

Typically yes, but every individual is different. This is a personal decision. The relaxation benefits of first trimester massage are many, and the massage that I provide during this time frame is extremely gentle and modified for safety. However, women with a history of miscarriage or pregnancy complications may want to steer clear of bodywork until they've reached the second trimester. If you have concerns, I encourage you to consult your healthcare provider.

WHAT DOES A PREGNANCY MASSAGE SESSION LOOK LIKE?

After completing the necessary intake forms, you and I will have a conversation regarding how you have been feeling in your body and your goals for treatment.  My prenatal massages are given with the client lying on her side, or in a semi-reclined position (for short periods of time).  I utilize pillows, bolsters, and props to keep you comfortable throughout your session.  Afterwards, we may discuss self-care activities that will extend your results.

HOW LATE IN PREGNANCY CAN I RECEIVE A MASSAGE?

You may receive massage in pregnancy up though and including your birthing time. Evidence shows that massage can be beneficial for pain reduction and relaxation when utilized during labor, especially during early labor.  Contact me about my on-call availability to provide early labor massage for your birth.

HOW SOON AFTER GIVING BIRTH CAN I RECEIVE A POSTPARTUM MASSAGE?

After a vaginal birth, you can receive a massage as soon as you'd like.  Anecdotally, most clients opt to get a massage within their first month postpartum.  After a cesarean birth, it is advisable to wait 4-6 weeks for a full body massage, however, area-specific sessions may be appropriate sooner, given an okay from your care provider.

IS IT OKAY TO BRING MY BABY TO A POSTPARTUM MASSAGE?

Yes! You are welcome to bring baby, baby + partner, or leave everyone else at home.  Baby on the table with you is also an option; you can both receive treatment for no additonal cost!

HOW IS A DOULA DIFFERENT FROM MY PARTNER OR CARE PROVIDER?

A doula works with your support team (including your partner and care provider) to ensure that you get knowledgeable, continuous, informational/emotional/physical support. It may be helpful for your partner to be reminded of ways to comfort you, or instructed on specific techniques that are particular to your labor pattern and physical sensations. Your support team may also want comforted themselves, or be reminded of what they learned in previous childbirth education.
